Barbara Davis is a sculptor whose work revolves around the central themes of shelter, care, relationship and interdependence.

Davis has always been fascinated by the relationship between insides and outsides, specifically the discrepancy between what is seen and unseen.  More recently the focus of Davis’s work has shifted to the exploration of the life cycle. This is influenced by the current transformation of nature and culture - what some are calling the great turning. Davis believes our disconnection from nature is killing us and that we need to find a way - individually and collectively - to remember and reconnect with ourselves as nature. Davis is doing this in part through her work as an artist.

To emphasize the interdependence of nature and culture, the current work is made from a mix of materials - mostly natural - some which have been significantly altered demonstrating their human imprint, while other materials are used in their raw form. Fiber - both plant and animal - is used to create the individual pieces suggesting forms that seem both plant and animal like. The objects feel familiar yet are not quite definable.

Her current work explores the process of metamorphosis and questions about life and death. Death does not exist without birth, and death is what brings about new life. The new work asks the question - am I (we) dying, becoming or both?
